Ratmansky's Harlequinade

A brand new production of Harlequinade, staged by Alexei Ratmansky after the original by Marius Petipa, will be premiered by American Ballet Theatre on 4 June with Isabella Boylston as Columbine, James Whiteside as Harlequin, Gillian Murphy as Pierrette and Thomas Forster as Pierrot. Sarah Lane, Jeffrey Cirio, Stella Abrera and David Hallberg will lead the ballet for the first time on 5 June. There will be debuts by Misty Copeland (Columbine), Daniil Simkin (Harlequin), Hee Seo (Pierrette) and Alexandre Hammoudi (Pierrot) at the 6 June matinee, and by Cassandra Trenary (Columbine), Gabe Stone Shayer (Harlequin), Christine Shevchenko (Pierrette) and Blaine Hoven (Pierrot) at the evening performance. A comic ballet in two-acts, Harlequinade is set to music by Riccardo Drigo and was originally premiered in 1900 in St Petersburg. The new production will feature sets and costumes by Robert Perdziola and lighting by Brad Fields. Harlequinade is a co-production with The Australian Ballet.

YAGP, New York Finals and Gala

AMANDA JENNINGS

Youth America Grand Prix is the world’s largest global dance network, and there can be no doubting that it admirably fulfils its mission statement: “To support and develop world-class dancers, ages 9-19, of all economic, ethnic and geographic backgrounds by providing scholarship auditions, performance and education opportunities, and by serving as the global network of dance, connecting students, teachers, schools, dance companies, dancers, and audiences.” Since its foundation in 1999 by the awe-inspiring Larissa and Gennadi Saveliev, the organisation has extended and expanded to achieve a truly global reach; this year no fewer than 10,000 young dancers entered the competition from countries on every continent except Antarctica. The logistical difficulties involved in such an enterprise, with preliminary heats all over the world, hardly bear thinking about, and it is testament to the determination and sheer hard work of the founders that the concept develops and gains in stature each year. Highly respected judges came from all quarters.

Of the original 10,000+ entrants, 1,500 were selected to attend the finals in New York, taking place over several days and culminating in the Final Round at Lincoln Center, where 50 Juniors (aged 12-14) and 45 Seniors (15-19) danced their hearts out in pursuit of the various opportunities on offer, including the chance to perform at the YAGP gala the following evening. A full report on the YAGP New York Finals and Gala will be published in the June issue of Dance Europe.
