Jacopo Tissi

Italian dancer Jacopo Tissi as been promoted to a principal dancer at the Bolshoi Ballet. Tissi was dancing with La Scala under the directorship of Makhar Vaziev and when Vaziev took over the direction of the Bolshoi Ballet, Tissi followed him there. In a interview with Amanda Jennings in London in 2019, explained how this came about.

"So the time came at La Scala when we realised that Vaziev was going to get the job of director at the Bolshoi. When we got the news it was a bit of a shock, because for me he’s always been a very important figure, as a teacher, and he’s been my ballet mentor. Of course I understood that it was a big chance for his career, he had directed the Mariinsky and La Scala, and now the Bolshoi, I guess one of the highest companies a director can aim for, but I was worried about my own route at La Scala. We didn’t know who would take over, it was all uncertain, and I felt that I wanted to carry on working with Vaziev, with that mentality I had got used to. So I went to him, and he wanted to continue with me too, but he said, “Look, Russia is another world, how things work in the Bolshoi, the amount of work, is a little different from what you have here. Russia’s not Europe, it’s not Italy, so it’s going to be a different world for you.” He was a bit worried about the big change for me. He suggested I visit in the summer, just for a couple of weeks, so I could do classes, look for a coach, look at the repertoire and look at the city, and we could see how I was going to feel, then if we thought everything was going to be all right, we could continue there. I really liked it there when I first went, there’s such a respect for ballet traditions, great coaching, huge repertoire, so many shows. So I said I definitely wanted to stay."

Since joining the Bolshoi in 2017, he has danced a wide repertoire.

Tissi guested with The Royal Ballet in London in 2019, partnering Marianela Núñez in Romeo and Juliet, and also appeared with Svetlana Zakharova in her production MODANSE at the London Coliseum the same year.
